Volunteers Always Welcome
We are an extremely small staff that relies on help from our wonderful volunteer base to achieve our goals. Regardless of experience, you are welcome to come out to the farm and help! We need volunteers for traditional farm labor (planting, harvesting, weeding, working in the greenhouse, feeding livestock) and non-traditional tasks (farm beautification, marketing, farm-based education, community outreach, translating and marketing). We are building up our team for the spring and summer, so don’t be shy. We’ll work with your skill level to make your experience at Green Gate a great one, where you’ll get the chance to work with your hands and find out more about where your food comes from. Also, it doesn’t hurt that our Farm Dog, Boonie, is the cutest around.
How it works:
STEP 1: Fill out our volunteer request form.
STEP 2: Attend a Farm Tour (every Saturday at noon at our Urban Farm)
STEP 3: Discuss your availability with our Farm Staff after the Farm Tour and determine your volunteering schedule. Note: The Farm Staff will contact you to discuss availability.
STEP 4: Volunteer and become part of the Green Gate Farms family!
STEP 5: Apply for our workshare program if you are interested in a more significant volunteer commitment.
STEP 6: Help us with outreach! Post pictures on social media, tell your friends, bring up Green Gate at the water cooler, scream our name from the rooftops.
Before you come out to the farm, please complete an online application and plan on attending one of our Farm Tours. Cost is $10/person.
Saturday Farm Tours (12-12:30)
Saturday: Work Day (9-12), followed by a Farm Tour (12-12:30)
Please note tour times are in line with our CSA season & Farm Stand hours. We usually close up the farm August through mid-September and mid-December through January.
Urban Farm Volunteers
There’s plenty to do each day. Your help is welcome, regardless of experience. All we ask is that you become familiar with the farm before you volunteer. To do so, please try to attend our Farm Tours.
- Farm Tours are held at our Urban Farm, 8310 Canoga Ave., Austin, 78724.
- If there are still tasks at hand, you’re welcome to stay and volunteer after attending the tour. Getting your hands dirty is the best way to understand how our farm works, but regular volunteers start at 8:30AM.
- After the tour, folks interested in volunteering or becoming a Workshare can talk with the farm manager about their schedule, interests, and ask any other questions.
Bastrop Farm Volunteers
Green Gate Farms is looking for volunteers to help us at our certified-organic farm in Bastrop (at FM 969 & Howard Ln, Bastrop, TX 78602)! Volunteers will receive veggies and knowledge of how to farm in exchange for work. We’re welcoming folks out on Monday, Thursday and Saturday mornings, from 9AM-1PM. All volunteers must attend our Farm Tour and Volunteer Orientation at noon on Saturdays at our Urban Farm. Email us at email@example.com if you have any questions!
Volunteer Hours are generally 8:30AM – 12:30PM
What to bring
When you come, please bring your own:
- Work shoes – Covered toes/ankles are important
- Sunscreen, bug spray
Children and Pets
We like pets; however, we’ve found that they interfere with getting work done. Dogs are not welcome at the farm (they chase our livestock/cats, especially when you don’t think they will). We welcome minors (17-under), however, you must be accompanied by a guardian, in order to volunteer on our farm.
Our goal is to host monthly Family Work Days in the near future. In the meantime, children are encouraged to participate in our monthly Farm Camps to get a taste of farm life.
If at all possible, please leave yours in the car. Not only will you be able to better enjoy your experience and focus on the task at hand, you won’t spend any time searching the fields for a lost appliance.
