2 onions, finely sliced
2 cloves garlic, crushed
3 Tb oil
1 lb stewing meat, lamb, veal or beef, cut into 1-inch cubes
1-1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper
1 tsp turmeric
3 Tb tomato paste or 4 tomatoes, peeled and sliced
1/2 red pepper, chopped (optional)
1 lb fresh or frozen okra
1/2 cup pitted dates, chopped
Juice of 1 lemon

In a Dutch oven, brown onions and garlic in 3 Tb oil. Add pieces of meat and brown. Sprinkle with salt, pepper, and turmeric. Add tomato paste or tomatoes and red pepper. Stir in 3 cups water. Cover and simmer for 1 hour 15 minutes over low heat.

While meat is cooking, wash okra and cut off stems. Boil in salted water for 10 mins and drain.
When meat is done, add pitted dates, lemon juice and okra. Simmer, uncovered, for 15 minutes over low heat. Check to see if meat and okra are cooked. Taste sauce and adjust seasoning.
