While Farmer Skip and I were attending Terra Madre, Slow Food’s International Conference for farmers and food activists, the winter crops came in! The Turnip Greens and Kale are gorgeous. And due to last night’s first light frost, we picked quite a few Green Tomatoes this morning. You’ll also find the last of the hot peppers — Serranos, Joe E Parker, Hungarian Hot Wax — at the farm stand today and tomorrow. So, come by, load up and catch up. There’s plenty of eggs, meat, and flowers as well. Also, good news — we’ll have pies in time for Thanksgiving. Let us know your preferred flavors so we can tell our baker.
Finally, our farm is brimming with new animals — newborn goats, sheep and piglets. Absolutely adorable. Tell your friends to come to this Saturday’s tour at noon ($5) to meet them all. (Same time as rooster processing class — details below.)
This Week’s Share
CSA members, your share this week (7A out of our 14 week season), is likely to include:
Tomatoes – just a few (red and green)
Napa Cabbage (quite large)
Squash (either winter or summer)
Green Peppers (Tues only)
Hot Peppers (Tues only)
This is a transition week as we shift from summer to fall crops. That’s why some of you will be receiving hot peppers, while others aren’t. Also, the tomatoes are coming in… slowly. You should receive the first of them this week.
Also, most of you will receive a rather large Napa Cabbage. Wow! Slice it up for stir fry or a warm soup now that fall is in the air.
Trying to decide what to do with your share? Check out Mindful Bellyful, a food blog by member Emily Leuba-Jones. This month she has committed to posting an entry each day for 30 days, many of which may feature her CSA Share. http://mindfulbellyful.blogspot.com/
