Cultivating Organic Food, Communities, and Farmers

Over the years, we’ve hosted everything from baby showers to company dinners to fundraisers and Mad Hatter Tea parties.

One of our favorite events was Outstanding in the Field‘s elegant dinner for 200 guests who gathered in our hayloft and farm stand to savor freshly harvested food from our fields prepared by the superb Lenoir Restaurant. (October 2012). Whether your event is small or large, you are welcome to rent our farm (see rates below).

Special Events FAQ

What is included with the rental of Green Gate Farms?

Guests have access to the entire farm. This includes the Children’s Garden and Magic Tree House, Herb Garden, Vegetable Fields, Fire Pit, and the Big Red Barn and Hayloft.

The centerpiece of this historic farm site is the Big Red Barn, built in 1902 by the Bergstrom Family, Swedish immigrants for whom Austin’s airport is named. The Big Red Barn is one of the few remaining working barns in Travis County. In addition to serving as a striking backdrop for your photos, it can seat up to 75 guests in the hayloft.

Our Children’s Garden, a shady area beside the barn, is perfect for picnics and for children who’d like to explore our Magic Tree House. In addition to acres of lush vegetable rows, your guests will enjoy seeing our livestock areas that feature rare-breed ducks, pony, sheep, goats, chickens and pigs.

Do you offer any special services?

We’re happy to provide you with horse-drawn wagon or buggy rides (for bride or guests), organic food and flowers, and decorative items ranging from quilts and Mason jars to hay bales and flower vases. Fun on-farm lodging — Teepees — should be available in 2014.

You are welcome to use the side of the barn or movie screen in the hayloft to showcase photos or films.

Does your venue often accommodate more than one event at a time?

No. The farm is all yours when you are here.

How many tables and chairs are available?

Your rental fee includes access to all of our tables (a mix of rectangles and rounds) and chairs (a mix of folding chairs and benches), which can seat 150 guests.

Who sets up and breaks down all the tables and chairs for my event?

Event set-up and break-down is done by your event planner, catering company, or friends and family.

Are sparklers, firework, or candles allowed?

The Big Red Barn is a historic site; no smoking or fireworks is allowed near the buildings. Fireworks are not allowed because they spook our livestock and guard dogs.

Covered candles and luminaries are permitted everywhere but in the Big Red Barn.

Is there a sound system or band at Green Gate Farms? How late can music play?

In order to be a good neighbor, loud music must end by 11 p.m. You are welcome to have a quieter, acoustic music play longer. We do not have a sound system or house band, but this is Austin and we’re happy to refer you to a wide range of talent.

How many guests can Green Gate Farms host?

We can accommodate up to 250 guests.

Do you offer valet parking? How many parking spaces are available?

Parking for 200 cars is easily accessible to the Big Red Barn. Valets have not been necessary for the many events we’ve hosted here.

What kind of liability insurance do we need?

Do you offer lodging? Are accommodations nearby?

Our farm is just eight miles east of downtown Austin so there are plenty of choices for accommodations near us, including the Oak Forest RV Park, which is located across the street from our farm. Contact them for further information (1-800-478-7275). We hope to offer rustic on-farm lodging in 2014.

Is the venue covered or indoors?

You have a choice of both, our indoor hayloft (seats 75), covered farm stand (seats 50), as well as open fields.

Do you have onsite catering?

We can provide you with access to leading chefs who cook with seasonal, organic ingredients. Our caterers range from simple to sophisticated. Just let us know what you prefer.

Do you have a liquor license?

No

Can I bring my own alcohol?

Yes. There must be a systematic way of distinguishing who is over the age of 21 (wristbands, marks on hands, ID checks for each drink) according to TABC regulations. See: http://governor.state.tx.us/music/guides/venues_special_events_guide

What additional types of events do you service?

We’ve hosted everything from birthday parties and bar mitzvahs to conferences and school field trips. Our community-based farm supports our members and neighbors through annual fundraisers as well as fun events like Mad Hatter Tea Party.

How do I reserve the farm?

Reserve a date with 50% deposit and $500 refundable damage deposit with rental agreement.

Please note that a portion ($500) of your payment is a tax-deductible donation to New Farm Institute, the farm’s 501(c)3 nonprofit education center that teaches sustainable farmers of all ages.
