At Green Gate Farms we’ve been dedicated to feeding good, clean, fair food to our neighbors since opening our doors in 2006. There are few healthy food options where our farms are located (on the eastside of Austin and westside of Bastrop), which is one reason why we support federal feeding programs like WIC and SNAP, thanks to assistance provided by Sustainable Food Center.
What is the SNAP program?
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as food stamps, is the largest program of our country’s hunger prevention safety net and offers nutrition assistance to millions of eligible, low-income individuals and families.
Green Gate Farms accepts SNAP at its farm stand (open Tuesdays, 3-6; Fridays and Saturdays, 10-2). The Sustainable Food Center (SFC) enables Green Gate Farms to accept SNAP through its Double Dollar Incentive Program (DDIP). This program is the first of its kind in Texas and allows individuals or families who receive SNAP benefits to double the amount of food they receive at our Farm Stand. SFC reimburses Green Gate Farms, which allows us to match up to $20 of fruits and vegetables during every transaction.
What is the new SNAP CSA Program?
In May 2016, Green Gate Farms and SFC launched a SNAP Community Supported Agriculture (CSA), which provides customers a weekly share of freshly harvested, organic vegetables.
This program allows customers with SNAP benefits to sign up for a 4-week, 6-week, or 8-week CSA at half price. The SNAP CSA is also possible through SFC’s Double Dollar Incentive Program(DDIP) and functions with the same parameters, except there is no $20 match limit. For example, a customer can charge $100 to their Lone Star Card during one transaction and then receive fresh vegetable CSA shares for the next 8 weeks. Our SNAP CSA program will vastly improve the health of our neighbors by providing reliable access delicious, nutritious food while saving the customer time by avoiding multiple transactions.
How can you I get involved and help Green Gate succeed?
- Spread awareness
Please post our SNAP CSA flyers at your local community centers, businesses, schools, religious centers, and events! Sharing pictures on your personal social media of our farm stand produce or CSA shares and using the hashtag #SFCDoubleDollars helps, too. You are our marketing team! To get more involved and join our SNAP committee, email firstname.lastname@example.org.
- Debunk myths
Misconceptions abound about government feeding programs like SNAP.
Here’s a truth:
“More than 42 percent of SNAP recipients live in households in which at least one adult is working but still cannot afford to put food on the table” (USDA, 2016).
SNAP users typically participate in the program for just 12 months, utilizing benefits during their most desperate times (USDA, 2016). These programs are crucial for millions of hardworking Americans, including teachers, students, military families, artists, seniors and others. Please tell your friends they may qualify for SNAP and can use their benefits at our farm.
“Last year 7.9 million fewer people were struggling to provide adequate food for themselves or household members than when President Obama took office in the midst of the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression,” said Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack. “We must continue to invest in initiatives like the Food Insecurity Nutrition Incentive, which are maximizing SNAP recipients’ access to healthy foods and are playing a major role in winning this battle against hunger.” (USDA, 2016)

Our CSA members gain access to the best tasting, most nutritious local food possible in return for providing the farm with much needed financial stability. We offer a seasonal Vegetable CSA, and Egg CSA and a year-round Meat CSA. You can pause or donate your CSA while you’re out of town!
Our certified organic vegetables are amazing! That’s because we choose varieties to make your mouth sing. And because flavor matters most, our produce, especially our tomatoes, must be handled with care. For instance, they can’t be shipped, their skins just couldn’t take the trauma. Most of our produce is sold the day it’s harvested to ensure that you get it at its peak of flavor.
- We grow more than 75 varieties of certified organic vegetables and herbs.
- Many of these plants are delicate, rare heirloom varieties bursting with flavor.
- We guarantee that what we grow tastes nothing like what you buy in most stores.
- We sell eggs and meat from our rare breed pigs, Nubian goats, and chickens.
